HYPERACTIVITY
This condition must exist for at least 6
months, begin before age 7, and include at least 8 of 14 possible behaviors
related to hyperactivity, distractibility, and impulsivity. The behaviors are described as chronic (severe) and pervasive
(in all areas of life). These
students may be restless, overactive, excitable, and impulsive. They may have difficulty remaining seated, disturb other
children, have temper outbursts, and explosive unpredictable behavior. Strategies – allow
movement, use novelty to capture attention, changes in voice level, use
underlining or highlighting, remove as many distractions as possible, use a
planner for homework assignments. Assessments – Attention
Deficit Disorders Evaluation Scale, Children’s Attention and Adjustment
Survey, Conners’ Abbreviated Teacher Rating Scale, Subtests of the following
assessments test hyperactivity: Social
Skills Rating System (Gresham & Elliott, 1990), Revised Behavior Problem
Checklist (Quay & Peterson, 1987) Children and Adults with Attention
