Life After High School:  

11TH Graders

 

As a parent, I can:

 

·         Check on college entrance test dates and registration

·         Review specific entrance requirements for post-secondary training programs my child may wish to attend

·         Review graduation requirements to assure my child is getting appropriate credits

·         Encourage my child to gather information on financial aid and scholarships

·         Attend college airs and career fairs with my child

·         Encourage my child to participate in work-bases activities:

On-The –Job Training

Diversified Cooperative Education Training

Attend High Tech Center

·         Teach my child to manage his/her time

·         Help my child develop a list of characteristics necessary for full time

employment

·         Have my child visit my place of work

·         Emphasize how home responsibilities relate to the workplace

 

 

 

 

 

As a student, I can:

 

·         Double check that I am on schedule to graduate

·         Make up classes I haven’t passed

·         Take electives that tie in with career interests

·         Set goals with my transition team

·         Continue discussion progress with teachers

·         Be aware of any upcoming tests so I have enough time for study

·         Keep portfolio up to date

·         Visit with Counselors or college/career center

·         Find out if there are any classes the college requires me to have before attending

·         Make appointments to visit campuses or training facilities

·         Attend college nights and career fairs

·         Begin practicing interviewing skills in class or with transition team

·         Meet with Vocational Rehabilitation counselor so see if I qualify for services

·         Practice good personal health care

·         Practice appropriate interpersonal communication and social skills for different settings

·         Update resume

·         Determine my need for financial support

·         Explore legal status with regard to decision making prior to age of majority

·         Identify health care providers and become informed about sexuality and family planning issues

·         Identify needed person assistance services

·         Find a summer job

·         Attend summer school to repeat a class or for enrichment classes
