ATTENTION
The ability to focus on a given activity for extended periods of time.
Many students may be able to pay attention but not on what is most
important. They may focus on what
the teacher is wearing rather than on what he or she is saying. These students often fail to finish things they start, appear
to be inattentive and easily distracted and have a short attention span.
The Council for Exceptional Children estimates that 3% to 5% of
school-aged children have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
Strategies – use novelty to
capture attention, changes in voice level, use underlining or highlighting,
remove as many distractions as possible, use a planner for homework assignments.
Assessments – ‘Attention Deficit Disorders Evaluation Scale,
Children’s Attention and Adjustment Survey, Conners’ Abbreviated Teacher
Rating Scale.
