Session 14

Readings: Chapter 15

Welcome students! This is your last session for submitting assignments before the final. I appreciate all the hard work and effort that all of you put in for this class. I hope you enjoyed the class and I also hope that in addition to meeting your course credits, this course has helped to increase your own awareness of the environment.

A variety of issues and problems were addressed in the earlier chapters. This chapter discusses how to apply what has been described in earlier chapters to preserve the environment. The chapter begins with a discussion on the use and abuse of energy. Specifically energy use in transportation, industry, homes, commercial buildings is briefly described. Many strategies for saving energy are presented. In addition to alternate sources of energy such as solar energy are also examined.

As psychologists we are always interested in behavioral solutions to problems and the authors discuss some social psychological approaches to deal with environmental problems. The study of attitudes and attitude change is particularly relevant here and you were already introduced to this in earlier chapters. The use of education to preserve the environment is emphasized.

Your book also presents some examples of research designs for applied behavioral analysis. One such example presented in page 433 is the reversal design or the ABA design. The use of antecedent and consequent strategies are also discussed as possible interventions.

This chapter ends with an attempt to integrate the literature on environmental psychology from an interdisciplinary perspective and look toward the future of the environment.

  2. In Session 2, based on Chapter 1 you were asked to identify some problems in relation to the environment. Based on all the material you have read so far can you devise a strategy and develop a program to deal with at least two of the problems.

Activities

  1. Do the time-out exercise on page 422 in your book. Summarize your answers in a page or less. This assignment is due by April 26th.
