Session 13 Readings: Chapter 14 In this chapter we get a very pessimistic view of the future of the environment. Please note that the first section of this chapter is merely a discussion and presentation of opinions expressed by some environmental theorists and many of these views are just speculative. Most of the first section of this chapter is not based on any research findings. The next section deals with legal implications and the environmental law. This segment reflects how public awareness is growing with regard to environmental problems. By the time you read this chapter, you may realize that your own public awareness has also grown with your own continued exposure to the subject or environmental psychology (even though you took this course just to get course credit!). This is the most important section in this chapter. In the context of the environment two major principles are described. These are two major criteria upon which legal disputes are decided upon and evaluated. These two factors are nuisance and negligence. The authors discuss some of the problems in demonstrating this both at the individual and organizational level. The NEPA is the national Environmental Policy Act signed by Richard Nixon in 1970. There are two titles under this act. Your book details the policies and procedures of NEPA and also describes the mandated Council of Environmental Quality. This act has stimulated the development of many programs to assess a variety of environmental issues and concerns. Essays 1.
