Arachnids
Cimex hemipterus. Adult female,
dorsal view (unstained, high power). Bedbugs belong to the family Cimicidae
and hide in dark crevices in living quarters during the daytime. Larval and
adult stages must take blood meals every few days, generally at night and early
hours of the morning. Adults measure approximately 5 mm long by 3 mm broad,
and are shiny, mahogany brown in color. The body is flattened dorsoventrally
and covered with many hairlike spines. Unlike many true bugs (Hemiptera), they
lack wings.
