Course Description
MCB 4203C - Pathogenic Microbiology -
The biological basis of infectious diseases including: bacterial infections, the principles of the host-parasite relationship, the pathogenic characteristics and virulence factors of micro-organisms and the various modes of action of antimicrobial agents will be studied. The course material will be fully integrated with laboratory activities which are inquiry-based.

Prerequisites: MCB 3020C or MCB 2010C

Course Policies

Assignments: All assignments are due on dates specified by the instructor. Lab reports are due the next period after completion of the assignment. Completed assignments are collected at the beginning of class on the date due.

Attendance: Attendance in class is part of the learning process. Missing classes will effect your grade. Unexcusesd tardiness or attendance may mean missing a quiz or a laboratory session resulting in a zero point grade. Unususal circumstances resulting tardiness or class absence will be evaluated on a case by case basis by the instructor. The circumstances must be communicated to the instructor as soon as possible within 24 hours from the class time. Excused absences and make-up work must be negotiated with the instructor.

Grading : The grades for the course will be rely on lecture examinations,quizzes, identification of bacteriological unknowns, computer exercises and laboratory practice. The distribution of the grades is as follows:
Exams: 55% (Four total exams: 3 exams at 15% each, one at 10%)
Quizzes: 15% (varied format)
Unknowns: 10%
Lab Practice: 15%
 (Gram Staining: 2.5%)
 (Streaking: 2.5%)
 (Microscopy: 2.5%)
 (Plate Utilzation: 2.5%)
 (Lab Notebooks 5%)
Presentation: 5% (Emerging Pathogens)
Total: 100%

The final letter grade will be as follows:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F < 60%
