Theory establishes the framework for the field and helps persons within the field analyze and synthesize data, organize concepts and principles, suggest new ideas and relations, and speculate about the future.
Good theory describes and explains the various relationships that exist in the field; implies that there are elements of predictability, or that there are rigorous laws that yield high probability and control; prescribe action to be taken.
