Prerequisites:   PHY 2053C with a passing grade

Topics:   PHY 2054C is an introduction to electricity, magnetism, optics and atomic/nuclear physics. It is designed to be taken as a sequence with PHY 2053C. The course will cover a subset of chapters 17-30 in the textbook. A tentative sequence of covered materials and exams can be found at course schedule: http://ruby.fgcu.edu/courses/asakharu/2008spring/CP/Spring2008P.html.

Lectures and Attendance:   During the lecture part of our class meetings we will discuss the main concepts covered in your readings. It is very important that you read the assigned chapters in the textbook before you come to the class. Please, do not expect me to just read the textbook for you!
Attendance at lectures is expected. Solutions to most typical or difficult problems will be covered in lecture sections. In general, students who attend lectures will be better prepared for the course examinations.

Calculators:   You are required to bring a scientific calculator to each class meeting. No sharing of calculators during exams!

Laboratory:   The laboratory is an integral part of this class. Failure to complete and hand in all laboratory assignments will result in automatic F for the whole course. The laboratory will contribute 17% to your final grade, and you must pass the laboratory to pass the class! Formal, word-processed Lab Reports to be handed in at the time specified in your class schedule. Hand-written Lab Reports will not be accepted! The Lab Report also need to be submitted electronically to turnitin.com before 11:00 pm of the previous day. If you hand in or submit your Lab Report late, there will be automatic deduction of 10 points (out of a maximum of 100 points) for every day your report is late. Note, that to receive access to a Lab you have to submit Lab pretest trough your web based HW system.

Disclaimer:   Students agree by taking this course all required papers may be subject to submission for textual similarity review to Tutnitin.com for the detection of plagiarism. All submitted papers will be included as source documents in the Turnetin.com reference database solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism of such papers. Use of the Turnitin.com service is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Use posted on the Turnitin.com cite.

Homework:   Homework will account for 18% of your final grade. I encourage you to work the homework problems in small groups. However, simply copying the answer from somebody else is not considered working together and will be treated accordingly! All your homework assignments can be found at http://orion.cas.fgcu.edu. I will supply you with ID and initial password. You can work with your homework problems at any suitable for you time and from any location. Just note, that you have to submit the last solution before the deadline for the particular assignment. All deadlines are given at http://orion.cas.fgcu.edu and at course schedule.

Exams and Quizzes:   There will be four in class exams (midterm exams), each lasting for about 1.5 h. Each will account for 10% of your final grade. These exams will mainly focus on the material covered since the previous exam, however, some of them might build on previous material. There will also be a comprehensive Final Exam (20%). In addition to the exams, there will be short quizzes, which are mainly conceptual in nature (multiple choice, and/or short, free response). The quizzes and your in class participation will account for 5% of your final grade. Please, note that there will be no make up exams or quizzes. You are required to bring a working calculator to each class meeting. Sharing of calculators during exams or quizzes is not allowed. Students with a programmable calculator are not allowed to program formulae or other material related to the class into their calculator. I will provide you with a formula sheet for each exam.
