Course Description 

A culturally congruent, holistic, environmental, and health focused approach serves as a foundation for examination of the health needs, health hazards, economics, access to care, and healing practices of rural and culturally diverse populations.  Health promotion is integrated with application to nursing practice experiences. 


Prerequisites 

NUR 3123 Physiological Responses to Alterations in Health 
NUR 3149 Chemical, Herbal, and Nutritional Therapies
NUR 3067C Health Assessment: Basis for Professional Practice

Course Objectives 

At the completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the unique features of rural communities and environments as they  relate to community health nursing practice. 
  2. Analyze the impact of culture on an individual's lifestyle, decision making and health practices.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to conduct assessments of clients in order to plan   culturally congruent, holistic nursing care.
  4. Deliver culturally congruent, safe and compassionate nursing care.
  5. Plan and conduct needs based, health promotion activities with culturally diverse clients living in rural environments.

Graded Course Assignments & Practice Evaluation

This course follows the grading system of the School of Nursing where a grade of "C" or better constitutes satisfactory progression in required nursing (NUR) courses *.

Practice Evaluation
Your practice will be evaluated using the School of Nursing Practice evaluation tool.  You must obtain a Satisfactory on all areas of this tool to successfully pass this course.

Health Promotion Project 

The health promotion project is worth 30% of the total grade for the course.
Students will have a choice of  topic options around which to focus their project. Click on the active link above to read the details and requirements of this assignment.

Cultural Assessment and Project

The cultural assessment requirement is worth 30% of the total grade for the course. Students will make a selection  from a variety of project options to complete the project component of this assignment. Click on the active link above to read the details and requirements of this assignment. 

Examination

There will be an examination worth 30% of the total grade for the course in July at the end of the course.  Additional details about the examination will be posted on the web board.

We will use the Web Board in this course to discuss course issues and to post class activities.
10% of your  grade is based on your participation in the Web Board. You can get information about how to use web board when you login and click on help.

All students are expected to participate in web board discussions.  When you submit a message to the bulletin board, click only once. Your message will be sent twice if you double click.  Read messages posted by other students and the instructor.  Ask questions and make comments about what someone else has said.  This is your opportunity to discuss topics and issues.  The instructor will monitor the discussions frequently.
