EDF 6215: Homework 4

Question, Answer & Tips Page

Question:

Answer:

TIP: Negative reinforcement and punishment are very different things. One creates learning, the other does not. If you do not understand this distinction, than you are not ready to proceed. Re-read, find a new book, talk to your friends, or call me!

TIP: If you are going to teach a new behavior, you must be concerend about the stimulus-discriminant, the operant, and the stimulus-reinforcer. If I cannot identify these components in your response, than the response is incomplete.

TIP: Reinforcers ALWAYS ccome after the operant. Anything else is not Skinner's model, and for purposes of this assignment, will be considered incorrect. (Yes- I recognize that from a constructive perspective I am treading on thin ice, but the point is to learn a theory that was created by someone else, not to create your own right now. You will have the opportunity to create your own for years to come in your own classroom.)

TIP: Punishment is not effective in teaching new behaviors. Is your goal to teach new behavior or temporarily suppress an old one?

TIP: One of the best ways to stop a behavior is to teach a new behavior that is incompatible with the old (you cannot blow bubbles an hold your breath at the same time!).

TIP: Create a list of vocabulary terms and definitions. Now, review your homework- have you used these terms correctly? If you are not sure, there is a high chance you have not.

TIP: "Everyone lies about sex." From Stranger in a Strange Land by R. Heinlein.
