Health Assessment: Basis for Professional Practice

 Guidelines for Practicum Exam

Objectives:

 Demonstrate history taking and health assessment skills on clients of various ages, genders, and cultures. 

Procedure:

 Students will demonstrate health assessment on two systems.

 For the first assessment, students will:

Students will enter the examination room and select their two systems. Students then inform instruct their client to remove any necessary clothes and relax until they wash their hands and return with necessary equipment. Students will start the examination by asking selected health history questions (4-5 questions only due to time constraints). Students will then demonstrate the health assessment on their selected systems. Students will conduct the exam as if they did not know the client because a portion of the evaluation is based on giving clear instructions to the client. Faculty will not ask students questions during the exam. Students should not interact with the instructor during the exam (i.e. you do not have to explain what you are doing) Faculty will not interrupt the student or ask questions unless it is impossible to determine what the student is examining.

Guidelines:

 

Students will have ½ hour to demonstrate health assessment and ½ hour to document findings for a total of 1hour.  

Your lab instructor will coordinate the time and date of the health assessment practicum exam at a mutually convenient time. The exam will be scheduled during the week of 12-8-97.  

Students are responsible for arriving at the site 10 minutes prior to the established time of the exam. 

Students are responsible for bringing in their own stethoscope, ruler, tape measure, and penlight. 

Students are responsible for bringing a lab partner to the examination to demonstrate the health assessment on. The lab partner can wear a sports bra and loose fitting shorts (or a two-piece bathing suit) during exam.

How to Schedule Your Exam: 

Coordinate the exam time and date with your lab instructor. 

Grading: 

Students will be evaluated on 10 objectives. Each objective will be rated on a scale of 1-10; with 10 being the highest rating. The grade will be based on the summation of points in each of the 10 categories.
