: : : : : Should the cost for mandated continuing education be who's responsibility the employer or the health care professional?

: : : : Mandated CEU's if required for a particular job should be paid be the employer ie ACLS

: : : I disagree Peggy. It's a requirement to maintain my job. I seem to be outnumber and I understand the rational, but what is being said that if the employer doesn't come through then it is the fault of the employer that I didn't maintain my license and my job and that is incorrect. It is my responsibility. Now, I wouldn't turn down help from the employer, but again that isn't their responsibility.

: : Jonathan - I see your point but I also see what Peggy is trying to say. You pay for your own CEU's and you get to choose which classes you want to take. If an employer wants you to take a specific class, he should pay for it. You can take any number of classes if your only goal is to maintain your license.
: If the employer decides that inorder for you to continue and maintain your job, you need to take such and such courses and you decide that it is their responsibility to pay and they don't, what then? You pay for the course if you want to keep that job. I again disagree. Certain job catagories require certain expertise. If you want to work in that area, then it is your responsibity to maintain your competency, not the employers. This also includes paying for it. Again, if the employer agrees to pay, great. I am not saying turn down the money. All I am saying is that it should not be an expectation of the staff.

I think that if that is the way you negotiated your employment when you were hired then it is your responsibility. But if CEU's were paid for by the employer since you were hired it can be construed by many to be like part of their benefits, again depending upon how it was presented to them upon employment. If this benefit is later revoked, it is like taking $$ out of their pocket. This is not to say that it is not done. I just think it is something that should be agreed upon before employment.
