Drawing analyses are useful with TAT and Rorschach testing and are good to elicit responses from shy or verbally reticent children. When looking through the pictures look for patterns. Some have suggested that houses with smoke from the chimney indicate anxiety. Trunks are indicative of ego strength and roots suggest being in touch with reality. When photos are places in the upper half of the page they suggest fantasy. When looking at humans in pictures, look for orientation of people, relationships, and size. Look for clusters of traits that might indicate rigidity or fluidity, spontaneity or control. It is also important to ask the person about the picture.

This is drawn by a female in First Grade. She comes from a Spanish speaking family which emigrated from a Caribbean island. This smart, pretty, friendly young girl listens well.


This is drawn by a male in First Grade. The school has assessed him as educationally mentally retarded. He rarely finishes an assignment and can't perform at the level of the other students. He is from Haiti.


This is drawn by a male in the First Grade. This young man lives with his mother. Both have emigrated from Haiti. He has a hard time making friends and gets into trouble easily. He is good hearted.
