Welcome to our great adventure in anthropology, education,
and technology. You have chosen to participate in the latest commitment
for the future of higher education. By taking an on-line course you will
be testing the quality and availability of distance learning. In a way,
we are an experimental group. The academic world is curious to know if
you learn as well as you would had you come to class. This is an great
responsibility for you to learn at a distance. You can see how this has
great importance for meeting the needs of students who live far away and/or
work full time. You may be using a home computer, a computer at one of
the satellite campuses or even using the campus computers on your own time
schedule.
This course will be asynchronous. That means you will be able to access the material when it is convenient for you, late at night, early in the morning. The only synchronous event we will have is my weekly office hours on every THURSDAY (except spring break) from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. That is the time we can chat about questions regarding weekly assignments. Just remember that on Monday the new class material will be presented. You have until the POSTED DEADLINE to complete your assignments. After that the quiz will be disconnected and you will not be able to receive credit for that week. HINTS TO GET YOU STARTED: Your text publisher has provided you with a free study guide. After you have read your chapter you might want to prepare yourself for the assigned questions by filling out the guide's review. As we progress through the book, more and more questions will be used from the study guide to make your life simpler. If you like to work ahead, you can anticipate what the comments and questions will be. For some chapters, the guide's introductory text will substitute for my observations. In that case, you may relax in your favorite chair to get started--reading the old fashioned way. Today we will focus on learning the technology. But first, let's take a look at the syllabus. The syllabus will be available on the course website, but you have been given a paper copy to look over today. Now on to learning the technology |
