When reading the chapter think about why women perform certain roles and men others according to strength theory; compatibility-with-child-care; economy of effort; and expendability theories. Next ask your cultural friend about roles women perform in their country of birth. Do any of these theories fit? If so, which one and why? If not, come up with your own theory of why women perform those roles instead of men. Support your theory with what your cultural friend has told you.
Ask your friend about who provides the food and who prepares the food. We are concerned with equality between the sexes in this country. Ask your friend if women are considered equal in their native country. Why or why not? Does it seem to have anything to do with food?
