Application--that is what this chapter explores. More and more anthropologists are involved in assisting communities and organizations in meeting practical needs. One may study the effects of net bans on coastal fishermen in Florida and make policy recommendations. Another may study the food customs and beliefs of people with high blood pressure and plan programs to modify diet. Another may work with rural people in foreign countries to develop improved farming practices to provide more food for the families. Applied anthropology means getting involved with the people you study to meet their needs. Perhaps as you go to other careers or continue in anthropology, you will remember the lessons you have learned in this course and see the culture around the people--knowing other's customs are not better than or less than, but just different.
You have covered a lot of territory, since you began your journey. I hope that you have learned to understand and apply the many terms used in anthropology and to think more about the influence of culture in our lives. Read the chapter on other applications of anthropology and answer the questions and write your own impressions of your friend's culture for the last time.
