Marriage in Seminole Culture

By Alice Snow

In Seminole culture, a person is not allowed to marry a close blood clan or line. A person must marry another clan. Separate clans are not considered kin. Otherwise a person can marry whom he or she chooses. A wedding was arranged years ago. The bride's mother's side and the groom's mother's side made the arrangement. Today they do not arrange weddings. They have a choice. A wedding can be in a church or any place and go through the same licensing as others do. A community elder can perform a marriage ceremony if asked.
