Culture Change for the Seminole

By Alice Snow

When I was a little girl I didn't know what happened in the outside world because we stayed home in our camp. We played with other little kids and when we got old we could see good things around us. Then my life changed. I wanted to find out what is good for me. More and more I said, "I want to go to school to be a leader to help my people who have little education." The people wanted me to help them. I was willing to do that. I am still helping. People need me to help them all time. This was a good change. A change in our culture that is bad is not taking the time to learn our language. When we teach Creek words and people do not come to learn, they are not able to speak to our elders. The way I see it, the people are not trying to pick up the words. It is bad to lose the language.
