Field Day: Making Extra Money in the Seminole Community

By Alice Snow

Each February, the Seminole Indians at Brighton Reservation have Field Day, a festival that involves the whole community in children's day, arts, crafts, entertainment, and rodeos. When we had Field Day this year, we had a clothing contest (see photograph). Adults, kids, and babies show off their Indian dresses and Indian jackets. Lots of them participate and win money. Some of the Seminole women make a living making Indian clothing. The Eastern Rodeo Association offers money prizes to the winners in the Indian Rodeo for the tribal members who ride the longest on bulls or run the fastest in barrel races.
