Remember the question asked in the second session? Ask two people to stand and talk to each other. What is the measurement of the distance between their feet?
If we had done this exercise in different cultures we would have gotten different results. The proximity that people stand from each other is a learned cultural phenomenon. In some cultures, conversationalists are likely to stand much further or much closer from each other.
Here are our class results.
Fortunately everyone measured the distance between a male and female, because the difference varies if the people are both males, both females, or the opposite sex. Which group of pairs, M/M, F/F, or M/F would stand the closest?
Every couple made eye contact. In some cultures, to make eye contact is considered rude. That is why, anthropologists take their lead from the people they observe. If they notice they are not making eye contact, they do not either.
