Reader Response Sheet for Evaluative Critique of first and second draft

Answer the questions below, being as specific as possible.

  1. Does the title provide a clear stance on the topic?  If not, suggest how it might be revised to do so.
  2. Read the first paragraph and then pause. Write down what you expect the topic, purpose and audience of the paper will be.
  3. Now, finish reading the paper. Were your expectations for the topic, purpose and audience fulfilled? If not, what do you now thing the topic, purpose and audience are?
  4. What do you think the main idea or thesis of the paper is?
  5. What evidence is used to develop or support the thesis? Is the evidence appropriate? Is there sufficient evidence? If not, what sort of evidence should the writer consider?  Provide constructive feedback to your peer by making comments, questions and suggestions on their paper as you have seen instructors in classes do for you.  
  6. Does the author take into account different points of view about the thesis of the paper and consider counterarguments?
  7. Are there any counterarguments the author does not consider but should?  Identify them and suggest where they might find more information.
  8. Summarize the paper, devoting one sentence to each topic addressed.
  9. Provide editorial comments and questions, requests for clarification on the copy you edit. Provide CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM that you think will assist the author in improving their final paper.
  10. What did you like best about the paper?
  11. Did anything in the paper surprise you?
  12. What two features of the paper most need improvement?
